Patio Door Sizes: Standard US Widths vs European Max Panels

Large European lift-and-slide patio door open to a living room

A stock US two-panel patio door (Andersen's 400 Series gliding door, for example) is 5, 6 or 8 ft wide and 6 ft 8 in to 8 ft tall. European systems go past that: a single lift-and-slide panel can run up to about 10 ft 6 in wide by 8 ft 10 in tall, and a bifold leaf is up to about 3 ft 3 in wide. The size you can build is set by panel weight and hardware, not by a catalog grid.

Most "how big are patio doors" pages stop at the stock sizes. If you are framing a new opening, the question is wider: what is standard, what is the biggest single panel I can get, and what do I need to tell the framer? This guide covers all three.

What Are the Standard Patio Door Sizes in the US?

Stock doors come in a small set of heights and widths. As one example, Andersen lists its 400 Series Frenchwood gliding door (checked on andersenwindows.com, October 2026) in these standard sizes:

Configuration Standard widths Standard heights
2 panels 5 ft, 6 ft, 8 ft 6 ft 8 in, 6 ft 11 in, 8 ft
4 panels 9 ft 9 3/4 in, 11 ft 9 3/4 in, 15 ft 9 3/4 in 6 ft 8 in, 6 ft 11 in, 8 ft

That is one brand's grid, and other makers publish their own, so check the sizing chart for the product you are pricing. Those are door sizes. The rough opening is larger, and each manufacturer publishes its own formula, so never frame from the nominal door size alone.

How Big Can a European Patio Door Get?

European systems are built to the opening, within the limits of glass weight and hardware. Largest published sizes from the system data I work with, by system class (provider specifications, not a promise for every configuration):

Door type Largest published size Notes
Lift-and-slide (aluminum, Visoglide-class) panel 126 in x 106 in (10 ft 6 in x 8 ft 10 in) 2 or 3 panel layouts, fixed panel combinations
Lift-and-slide (aluminum, MasterPatio-class) sash height up to 11 ft 10 in Slider version published to 1,322 lbs per sash
Sliding (uPVC) opening up to 19.7 ft x 8.2 ft Whole door, not one panel
Bifold (aluminum, ConceptFolding-class) leaf up to 3 ft 3 in x 8 ft 10 in Openings up to about 19 ft 8 in
Bifold (aluminum, heavy-duty class) leaf height up to 9 ft 10 in Published per-panel weight limit 265 lbs

Two things follow. First, a European slider is usually a few big panels instead of many small ones, so a 12 ft opening can be two 6 ft panels where a stock door would need a 4-panel layout. Second, height is where European systems gain most: several list panels 8 ft 10 in tall or more. The mechanism is explained in the large-glass lift-and-slide guide.

What Size Should a Patio Door Be for Your Opening?

Work from the room, not the catalog:

  • Up to about 8 ft wide: a French (hinged) pair or a two-panel slider. This is where stock sizes work.
  • 8 ft and wider: large lift-and-slide panels, where the view is one pane of glass instead of a grid.
  • 12 ft and wider: three panels, a fixed panel plus sliders, or a bifold if you want the whole wall open. See bifold vs lift-and-slide and multi-slide vs lift-and-slide.
  • Tall ceilings: I usually price a taller door before a transom. Glass weight rises with area, so I confirm the panel weight against the system data.

Remember that a sliding door only opens about half the width. A 12 ft two-panel slider gives you roughly a 6 ft clear opening; a bifold or a pocket layout opens much more.

Can You Get a Custom Size Patio Door?

Yes, and for European doors custom is the normal case. Aluminum and uPVC doors are built from the opening dimensions, in millimeters, within the system limits above. Wood and aluminum-clad wood doors are built to the opening as well; see wood sliding patio doors. What custom does change:

  • Lead time. Sizing is confirmed on the shop drawing before production. I confirm lead time per order.
  • Shipping. Very large panels need crating and a crew that can set heavy glass.
  • Price. Size is one of the main drivers; how it moves the number is in the patio doors cost guide.

How Do You Convert Door Size to a Rough Opening?

A European frame is specified in millimeters: 3200 mm is 126 in and 2700 mm is about 106 1/4 in. The rough opening depends on the mounting method, and floor-level sliders follow their own sill details, so I confirm it per order on the shop drawing. The conversion table, clearances and measuring steps are in the rough opening guide. Send me the opening in inches and I will return the frame size and rough opening.

FAQ

How big are patio doors? A stock two-panel door is typically 5, 6 or 8 ft wide and 6 ft 8 in to 8 ft tall; Andersen's 400 Series lists exactly those sizes. European systems can build single panels up to about 10 ft 6 in wide and 8 ft 10 in tall.

What are the standard patio door sizes? Andersen's 400 Series gliding door, for example, lists two-panel widths of 5, 6 and 8 ft in heights of 6 ft 8 in, 6 ft 11 in and 8 ft. Other makers publish their own grids.

What is the rough opening for a patio door? It is larger than the door by an allowance that depends on the product and mounting method. I confirm it against the shop drawing; the rough opening guide has the detail.

Can I get a custom size patio door? Yes. European aluminum, uPVC, wood and aluminum-clad wood doors are built to the opening within each system's panel size and weight limits. The size is confirmed on the shop drawing before production.

What is the largest patio door available? It depends on the system. Some aluminum lift-and-slide panels reach 10 ft 6 in by 8 ft 10 in, and heavier systems go taller. Panel weight and glass limit the final size, so I check each opening against the system data.
