Large European lift-and-slide patio door open to a terrace in a modern US home

A new European patio door costs about $1,300 to $4,500 supplied for a 5 ft French (hinged) pair, $3,200 to $8,400 for a 10 ft lift-and-slide and $7,600 to $11,000 for a 16 ft bifold, before freight, duty and installation. Door type, opening width and material decide the number.

"Patio door" covers several different products, and most price pages blur them together. This is the hub: one table per door type, what moves the price inside each type, and where to go for the detailed numbers. All ranges are budget figures from my own estimator model (October 2026), not a bid - double glazing at the low end, triple glazing at the high end, within the estimator's +/-10% band.

How Much Do New Patio Doors Cost by Type?

Supplied price means the door leaving the factory: frame, glass and hardware, with no freight, duty, installation or site work.

Door type Typical opening Supplied budget
French (hinged pair) 5 ft x 6 ft 8 in $1,300 - $1,900 uPVC, $1,900 - $4,500 aluminum
Lift-and-slide (2 panels) 10 ft x 8 ft $3,200 - $4,400 uPVC, $5,500 - $8,400 aluminum
Bifold (folding) 12 ft x 8 ft $6,300 - $9,100 aluminum
Wood / aluminum-clad wood any quoted from drawings

Hinged doors are the cheapest per opening. At equal width, an aluminum bifold and an aluminum lift-and-slide price about the same, and uPVC lift-and-slide is the lowest-cost option for a large opening. Per square foot the rate falls as the opening grows: the more glass a hardware set serves, the lower it is.

French and Swing Patio Door Cost

A French patio door is a hinged pair that opens like an entry door (inswing or outswing, depending on the system). It is the lowest-cost route to a glass door and the natural choice for openings up to about 6 ft wide. Supplied, at 6 ft 8 in height unless noted:

Opening uPVC Aluminum
Single door, 3 ft $900 - $1,200 $1,500 - $2,900
French pair, 5 ft $1,300 - $1,900 $1,900 - $4,500
French pair, 6 ft $1,500 - $2,100 $2,100 - $5,100
French pair, 6 ft x 8 ft tall $1,700 - $2,400 $2,300 - $5,700

The aluminum range is wide on purpose: it spans slim minimalist profiles up to steel-look sections with divided lites, which are different products. For a firm number the profile has to be named.

Sliding Patio Door Cost by Width

Past 6 ft, most European projects move to a lift-and-slide: the panel lifts off its seals when you turn the handle, glides with one hand and drops into a compression seal. Supplied, 2-panel, 8 ft height:

Opening width uPVC Aluminum
6 ft $2,100 - $3,000 $3,700 - $5,700
8 ft $2,700 - $3,700 $4,600 - $7,100
10 ft $3,200 - $4,400 $5,500 - $8,400
12 ft $3,600 - $5,100 $6,300 - $9,600
16 ft $4,500 - $6,300 $7,900 - $12,000

A standard big-box slider is a different class, around $800 to $5,000 supplied and $3,000 to $10,000 installed. The full breakdown - 4-panel doors, replacement jobs, price per square foot - is in the sliding patio door cost guide, and the mechanism is explained in the large-glass lift-and-slide guide.

Bifold Patio Door Cost by Opening

Bifold (accordion) doors fold the whole wall away, so they suit openings of 9 ft and wider. In aluminum they price about level with a lift-and-slide of the same width; the hinges, track and leaf count are what you pay for. Aluminum, supplied, 8 ft height, double glazed:

Opening Supplied
9 ft (3 leaves) $5,200 - $7,500
12 ft (4 leaves) $6,300 - $9,100
16 ft (5-6 leaves) $7,600 - $11,000
20 ft (6-8 leaves) $8,800 - $12,800

Details, divided-lite bars and the stack layout are in the bifold doors cost guide. If you are torn between folding and sliding, the bifold vs lift-and-slide comparison covers the trade-offs.

What Moves the Price Inside Each Type

In rough order of impact:

  • Width and height. Total cost climbs with area; the rate per square foot falls.
  • Material. Aluminum carries a real premium over uPVC, and there is a wide spread inside aluminum depending on the profile.
  • Glazing. Triple glazing adds roughly 11 to 15% depending on the system; whether it pays back depends on your climate zone.
  • Threshold. A flush, low threshold costs more than a raised sill and needs better drainage detailing.
  • Divided lites and finish. Simulated bars and dual-color RAL finishes push toward the top of a range.

Wood and Aluminum-Clad Wood Patio Doors

If you want a timber interior, the Timber Lift & Slide line comes in wood and aluminum-clad wood. I quote those from drawings, not from a table - send me the opening and I will price it next to the aluminum and uPVC options. The wood sliding patio doors post covers sizes, thresholds and care.

What Sits on Top of the Supplied Price

A supplied price is not what lands in your budget. Three more lines apply:

  • Freight and customs. Ocean freight, brokerage and import duty. A DDP (delivered duty paid) quote rolls them into one figure; see the DDP import guide and the tariff cost comparison. Do not budget from an assumed duty rate.
  • Installation. Done by your installer or the local team; I do not estimate it. Large panels need a crew that has set heavy glass and a dead-level sill.
  • Rough-opening work. Header checks, flashing and finish trim depend on the existing wall.

Which Patio Door Should You Price First?

  • Opening up to 6 ft, budget-driven: French doors.
  • 6 to 16 ft, everyday sliding access, big glass panels: lift-and-slide.
  • 9 ft and wider, you want the wall to open completely: bifold.
  • Timber interior: wood or aluminum-clad wood lift-and-slide.

FAQ

How much do new patio doors cost? A European French pair runs about $1,300 to $4,500 supplied for a 5 ft opening, a 10 ft lift-and-slide about $3,200 to $8,400 and a 16 ft bifold about $7,600 to $11,000. Freight, duty and installation come on top.

How much does a French patio door cost? A 5 ft French pair is about $1,300 to $1,900 supplied in uPVC and $1,900 to $4,500 in aluminum, at 6 ft 8 in height. The aluminum range reflects slim versus steel-look profiles.

What is the cheapest type of patio door? A hinged (French or single swing) door is the cheapest European option per opening. A standard big-box slider costs less still, but it is a lighter product with brush seals and no lift-and-slide mechanism.

Which patio door is most expensive? There is no single answer: at equal width, an aluminum bifold and an aluminum lift-and-slide price about the same, and both cost more than a French pair or a uPVC slider. Wood and aluminum-clad wood doors are quoted per project.

Does a patio door price include installation? Not in the supplied figures on this page. Installation is priced separately by your installer, and a DDP quote covers freight and duty only.

How do I get a real number for my patio door? Run the opening through the estimator for a landed range, or send me the drawings and I will return a line-item quote.
