If you are building in Texas and the window conversation has started, Andersen is almost certainly on the table. It should be. Andersen builds windows in Garland, north of Dallas, it sells through an established US dealer network, and its aluminum door line is sold in only five states - Texas is one of them.
So this is an honest comparison of Andersen vs European tilt and turn windows for a Texas home. I compare only what Andersen publishes on its own pages, next to what I source from European system providers. Where Andersen is the better call, I say so.
Andersen in Texas: What the Company Publishes
Andersen sells six series. On Andersen's own pages they break down like this:
- 100 Series - Fibrex composite, which Andersen describes as wood fiber and thermoplastic polymer, about 40 percent reclaimed wood fiber by weight. Launched in 2008. Assembled in Bayport, Minnesota, Garland, Texas and Goodyear, Arizona. Types: single-hung, double-hung, casement, awning, gliding, picture, specialty shapes.
- 200 and 400 Series - wood. The 400 Series pairs a wood interior with Perma-Shield exterior cladding, which Andersen calls a high-grade vinyl. Dual-pane glass is standard, triple-pane is an option. Types include casement, awning, tilt-wash double-hung, gliding, bay and bow.
- A-Series - wood interior with fiberglass and composite exteriors. Andersen lists a triple-pane option certified by PHIUS, plus impact-rated versions tested to the hurricane standards used on the Gulf Coast.
- E-Series - the custom line: wide color range, casements up to 8 feet tall.
- Andersen Aluminum (previously Heritage) - multi-slide, sliding, hinged patio and pivot doors. Andersen states it is available only in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Nevada and Texas. Some models carry a "thermally improved" option; the pivot door page lists a non-thermally broken frame and panel.
Warranty, per Andersen's comparison page: 20 years on glass and 10 years on non-glass parts for the 100, 200, 400, A-Series and E-Series, transferable to the next owner. Andersen Aluminum is not in that table, so check its own document.
One thing you will not find on any of those series pages: a tilt and turn window. The 400 Series "tilt-wash" double-hung tilts its sashes in for cleaning, but it is still a vertical slider. That is the real dividing line in this comparison.
The European Side: One Window, Two Openings
A tilt and turn window has one handle and two ways to open. Turn it 90 degrees and the sash swings in like a door. Turn it 180 and the sash tilts in at the top a few inches for secure ventilation. Closed, a multipoint lock pulls the sash onto compression gaskets on all four sides. The frames I source for Texas are thermally broken aluminum (a polyamide strip splits the inside and outside of the profile) or European uPVC, a multi-chamber profile with steel reinforcement. From the estimator's system data:

Andersen does not publish one U-factor range per series. It sends you to your dealer or the NFRC Certified Product Directory, which is the right source anyway, because the number changes with size, glass and grilles. I am not going to invent a range for them.

What Andersen Does Better
I would rather you hear this from me than from your framer.
Service and parts are local. A cracked 100 Series sash or a worn operator is a call to a US dealer. On a European window the part is still covered, but it ships from Europe unless you stocked spares.
NFRC is simple. Andersen points you straight to its NFRC-certified ratings in the national directory. With European systems it is usually achievable, but it is system- and project-specific, and a few of the systems I carry have no US listing at all. Coastal impact glazing. The A-Series lists impact-rated units for hurricane zones. Gulf Coast windstorm certification is a path I do not source, so on a coastal Texas lot Andersen or another US-listed impact product is the practical answer.
Traditional elevations. If the house is a double-hung colonial, a double-hung window is the honest spec. Andersen does that very well.
Where European Tilt and Turn Is Different
Operation. Tilt-in ventilation on a hot, humid night, with the sash locked a few inches open at the top, is not an operating mode on any Andersen series page. Neither is a full-height sash that swings into the room like a door, which is how a tilt and turn window gets cleaned and how it clears as an egress opening. Sealing. A multipoint lock compressing gaskets on four sides is a different design from a sliding sash that seals with weatherstripping along its tracks. On a sticky Houston or Austin summer that matters for comfort as much as for energy.
Big glass and slim aluminum. For steel-look grids, 16-foot lift-and-slide walls or narrow black aluminum frames, thermally broken European aluminum is built for exactly that. The Andersen Aluminum doors are sold in Texas too, so compare the thermal spec model by model.
Color and matching. Any RAL color, the same profile family across windows, doors and sliders, and one supplier for the whole facade.
How It Plays Out on a Texas Job
Texas is a cooling-load state. In IECC Zones 2A, 3A and 3B the SHGC cap is 0.25, and that is what plan review flags - not U-factor. Both sides can meet it with the right low-E coating; the Texas code guide has the zone-by-zone table and the local notes.
Augusta Drive in Montgomery, north of Houston, is three spec homes now in progress with steel-look aluminum windows and long rear runs of sliding glass, about 3,300 sq ft of glazing, with an NFRC-labelled glazing package for code submittal. On a lakehouse elsewhere in Texas, the windows are black aluminum on a nailing flange, framed into the stud wall the way a US crew expects. Neither design called for a double-hung. Plenty of Texas houses do.
FAQ
Does Andersen make tilt and turn windows? Not in any series Andersen lists online. The 400 Series tilt-wash double-hung tilts the sashes in for cleaning, but it opens by sliding vertically. A true tilt and turn window opens inward on side hinges and also tilts in at the top for ventilation.
Is Andersen or a European window better for a Texas home? It depends on the house. For a traditional elevation, a coastal impact zone, or when local service matters most, Andersen is a strong choice built partly in Garland, Texas. For a contemporary house with large aluminum openings, tilt-in ventilation and custom colors, European tilt and turn is the spec designed for it.
How long does each take to arrive in Texas? Andersen does not publish lead times; your dealer quotes them. European windows I source run about 14 weeks from approved estimate to delivery at a Houston-area site, DDP, with freight, duty and customs already in the price.
