In IECC Zones 2A/3A/3B, the binding number is SHGC (capped at 0.25 residentially), and European IGU packages default to high-performance low-E coatings that clear it on clear-appearing glass without going dark or reflective. U-factor (0.32-0.40 depending on zone) is the easier number - most double-glazed systems clear it without extra cost.
Do I need triple glazing in Texas?+
Almost never for the cooling load. Double glazing with the right low-E coating is usually the right call and costs less, weighs less on large sliding panels, and still clears code. The exceptions are acoustic-sensitive sites or a specific Passive House target.
