Black frames are the default look on modern custom homes right now, and most people assume the color is what makes them expensive. On European aluminum it is not. Black is a standard powder coat color, priced the same as white. What moves the number is the frame system, the way the window opens and its size.
So here are real numbers. Every price below comes from the same pricing model my project estimator runs on, calibrated against this year's manufacturer quotes - several of them for black houses.
The short answer
A black aluminum window supplied to a US project in 2026 costs roughly $590 to $920 for a small 24 x 36 inch tilt and turn unit and $1,460 to $2,300 for a 60 x 60 inch one, double glazed. A fixed picture window of the same 60 x 60 size runs $770 to $880. A black aluminum entry door runs roughly $2,000 to $2,400.
Per square foot that is about $58 to $63 for an opening 25 sq ft window in a standard aluminum system, and about $31 to $35 for a fixed one. Steel-look and premium systems sit higher. Freight, duty and customs come on top - the worked example further down shows how much.
What black actually adds to the price
On aluminum, very little - and usually nothing:
- Matte black powder coat (RAL 9005 or 9011). Same price as white. On two otherwise identical tilt and turn quotes I compared this month, switching between two matte RAL colors moved the price by less than a tenth of a percent. The powder is the same product, only the pigment changes.
- Black outside, white or another color inside. Dual color is a separate coating run on each face, so it carries a small surcharge on most systems. I price it per project.
- Black anodized. A different process from powder coat, priced by finish category rather than by color. Worth it on commercial or high-contact frames; I quote it per project.
- Matching details. Black handles, black hinges and a black warm-edge spacer inside the glass are available on most systems and make the black read as intentional up close.

Price per window by size
The table uses the estimator model for double glazed, clear glass, no bars. "Standard" covers the two lower-priced aluminum window systems I quote; "steel-look / premium" covers the narrow-sightline and premium systems. The spread in each cell is the difference between systems, not a markup.
| Window size (W x H) | Area | Fixed, standard | Tilt and turn, standard | Tilt and turn, steel-look / premium |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24 x 36 in | 6 sq ft | $310 - $355 | $590 - $635 | $795 - $925 |
| 30 x 48 in | 10 sq ft | $425 - $490 | $815 - $880 | $1,100 - $1,280 |
| 36 x 48 in | 12 sq ft | $480 - $550 | $915 - $990 | $1,235 - $1,435 |
| 36 x 60 in | 15 sq ft | $555 - $635 | $1,055 - $1,140 | $1,425 - $1,655 |
| 48 x 60 in | 20 sq ft | $665 - $765 | $1,265 - $1,370 | $1,715 - $1,990 |
| 60 x 60 in | 25 sq ft | $765 - $880 | $1,460 - $1,580 | $1,975 - $2,295 |
| 72 x 60 in | 30 sq ft | $860 - $990 | $1,640 - $1,775 | $2,220 - $2,580 |
| 72 x 96 in | 48 sq ft | $1,165 - $1,335 | $2,220 - $2,400 | $3,000 - $3,450 |
Three things to read from it. First, small windows cost much more per square foot than big ones - a 24 x 36 opening unit is about $100 per sq ft, a 72 x 60 one under $60. Second, an opening sash roughly doubles the price of the same size fixed light, because the hardware and the second frame are most of the cost. Third, the steel-look systems cost about a third more than standard aluminum for the same opening - that is the price of the slimmer profile, explained in steel-look windows as a modern alternative.
My estimates carry a +/-10% accuracy band on top of these figures. Where a specific window lands depends on the hardware set and glass make-up.
Black aluminum doors
| Door | Area | Typical price |
|---|---|---|
| Single entry or terrace door, 36 x 84 in | 21 sq ft | $2,035 - $2,420 |
| Single door, 36 x 96 in | 24 sq ft | $2,215 - $2,635 |
| Double French door, 72 x 84 in | 42 sq ft | $3,475 - $4,310 |
Large sliding and lift and slide openings are a different product - see sliding patio door cost.
What the add-ons cost
| Option | Effect on price | When you need it |
|---|---|---|
| Triple glazing | about +11-14% | Climate zones 5-8, noise, passive-style specs |
| Nailing fin | +6% on windows and doors | Flange installation in a US wood-frame wall |
| NFRC certified label | +5% | When your inspector or energy code asks for a label |
| Bars between the panes | about +2-5% per window | Traditional grid look, clean glass faces |
| Simulated divided lites | about +15% per window | Bars bonded to the glass, the most authentic grid |
| Insect screens | $170 per screen | Any operable window you want screened |
| High altitude glass | +6% | Sites above about 5,000 ft |
Black frames and a grid are a popular pairing - the Mississippi project uses exactly that on its living room picture window. For whether triple glazing earns its cost in your climate, see triple vs double glazing; for the flange detail, European windows with a nailing fin.
Does black aluminum get hot?
A black frame absorbs more sun than a white one, and that is a real consideration in the South and the desert West. On thermally broken aluminum it matters much less than on plastic frames: aluminum does not soften or bow at the temperatures a sunlit frame reaches, and the polyamide break keeps the outside heat from reaching the room side. The thermal break guide shows how that works.
Black uPVC is a different story. The color is a laminated foil, it costs extra over white, and very dark foils in hot climates should be confirmed for the specific profile. If budget is the driver, uPVC is still the cheapest European frame - roughly a third of the aluminum price per window, see the uPVC tilt and turn price list - but for a black modern exterior, aluminum is the material I recommend.
Worked example: a black aluminum house, 20 windows and an entry door
Here is a realistic package run through the three steps of the estimator.
Step 1 - Project size. 20 windows totalling 360 sq ft (half fixed, half tilt and turn), plus one 36 x 84 in entry door.
Step 2 - Options. Double glazing, no bars, nailing fin on. Color does not appear here, because black does not change the price.
Step 3 - Your estimate. Read the aluminum package.
| Line | Double glazed | Triple glazed |
|---|---|---|
| Windows and door, with nailing fin | $21,019 | $23,962 |
| Freight, duty and customs | $17,829 | $18,825 |
| Landed estimate (midpoint) | $38,848 | $42,787 |
| Estimator range (+/-10%) | $34,963 - $42,732 | $38,508 - $47,066 |
The same schedule in the premium aluminum package lands at about $53,800, and in uPVC at about $19,700. Freight is a fixed cost per container, so on a small package like this one it is a large share of the landed number; add sliding doors or more windows and the landed cost per window drops. Every estimate I send is DDP - duty, freight and customs are already in the number.
What the price does not include
- Installation. Local labor, quoted by your installer.
- Site work. Opening rework, headers for large glass, waterproofing details.
- Interior trim and sills. Usually by your finish carpenter.
For how black European aluminum compares with other materials across the whole house, how much European windows cost and aluminum windows cost put the numbers side by side.
Get your own number
Put your window area into the estimator - about two minutes, and you get the landed range for uPVC and two aluminum packages side by side. Black is already in that number. If you have a window schedule or drawings, send them to me and I will price every unit one by one, usually the same or next working day.
FAQ
How much do black aluminum windows cost? In 2026, roughly $590 to $920 for a small 24 x 36 inch tilt and turn window and $1,460 to $2,300 for a 60 x 60 inch one, double glazed and supplied. Fixed windows cost about half as much as opening ones of the same size. Freight, duty and installation come on top.
Are black aluminum windows more expensive than white? Not on European aluminum. Matte black powder coat is a standard color and costs the same as white. Dual color (black outside, a different color inside) and black anodized carry a surcharge that I price per project.
How much are black aluminum windows per square foot? About $58 to $63 per square foot for a 25 sq ft opening window in a standard aluminum system, about $31 to $35 for a fixed one, and more on small units. Steel-look systems run about a third higher.
Do black aluminum window frames fade or get too hot? Architectural powder coat on a quality European system is UV-stable, and black is the same coating as every other RAL color. Black frames absorb more heat, but thermally broken aluminum does not soften or warp at those temperatures, and the thermal break keeps the heat outside.
Are black aluminum windows worth it over black uPVC? They cost more, roughly three times as much per window as European uPVC. What you get is slimmer frames, larger glass, a durable powder coat instead of a foil and no heat-distortion concern. For a modern black exterior with big openings, that is usually the right trade.
