Hybrid Windows: PVC Core, Aluminum Shell vs Aluclad Wood

An architect draws dark, crisp metal window frames on a modern house, and the owner wants the price and the room-side feel of a PVC window. The answer people usually reach for is "aluminum-clad wood", and then they find out the interior will be timber, which is not what they asked for. There is a third construction, and it is the one this post is about.

A hybrid window, in the sense I use it, is a multi-chamber PVC window with an aluminum cover fixed to the exterior: PVC is what you see and touch inside, aluminum is what the weather and the street see outside. In the US the same idea is often searched as "aluminum-clad vinyl" or "aluminum vinyl windows". The system I offer for it is Kontur Alu, made in Poland.

It is a close cousin to aluminum-clad wood windows - same idea of a metal weather skin - but the core is different, and the core decides most of what you live with.

What is a hybrid PVC-aluminum window?

Think of it as two layers with two jobs:

  • The core is a multi-chamber PVC profile. It carries the glass, the hardware and the seals, and its chambers do the insulating. Inside the room it looks and cleans like any good PVC window.
  • The shell is an aluminum cover on the outside face. It gives the frame metal edges, a coated metal surface and the exterior color, coordinated with the architecture.

The cutaway on the product page shows both materials separately, which is the honest way to understand it:

Kontur Alu cutaway showing the multi-chamber PVC core and the aluminum exterior cover

What it is not: an aluminum window. The cover does not turn the frame into an aluminum system, and the structural and thermal behavior is that of the PVC window underneath. If you need the slim sightlines or very large openings of a structural aluminum frame, that is a thermally broken aluminum window, a different product.

How is a hybrid window different from aluminum-clad wood?

Same exterior idea, different core. This is the comparison I get asked about most, so here it is side by side:

Hybrid (PVC core + aluminum) Aluminum-clad wood Plain European PVC
Room side PVC Real wood (pine, meranti, oak and others) PVC
Exterior Aluminum cover, coated Aluminum shell over a vented gap, powder coated PVC, white or colored finish
Core material Multi-chamber PVC Laminated timber Multi-chamber PVC
Interior upkeep Wipe clean Wood finish, refreshed over the years Wipe clean
Exterior color Coated metal, chosen per project Any RAL, anodized options Foil, acrylic finish or white
Systems I quote Kontur Alu Clad Flush, Clad Hidden Sash, Clad Passive Kombisystem, Ideal Neo

The practical rule: if the wood interior is the point, a hybrid is the wrong product and aluclad is the right one. If the interior should be quiet, easy to clean and not a design feature, the hybrid gives you the metal exterior without paying for timber you do not want.

Why put aluminum on a PVC window at all?

Three reasons I see on real projects.

The look. Metal holds a sharp edge and a uniform coated surface. On a contemporary facade with dark frames, a coated aluminum exterior reads like the metal flashing and trim around it.

Color on the outside only. You can keep a light, neutral PVC interior and still match an exterior color to the cladding, the roof or the trim. The interior and exterior decisions are separated.

The physics of the two materials. PVC and aluminum behave very differently, and the hybrid uses each where it does the job:

Material property (typical, generic values) Rigid PVC Aluminum
Thermal conductivity about 0.17 W/m K (about 1.2 BTU in/h ft2 F) about 160 W/m K (about 1,100 BTU in/h ft2 F)
Thermal expansion roughly 2-3 times aluminum about 0.000013 in per in per F
Surface Molded or foil / acrylic finished Coated metal, sharp edges

Aluminum conducts heat hundreds of times better than PVC, which is why you want it as an outer skin, not as the insulating body. The PVC core keeps the insulating job; the aluminum is a weather-facing surface. These are generic material figures, not ratings for any window - the performance of a specific Kontur Alu assembly is confirmed with the glazing and seals selected for the project.

Hybrid vs regular PVC with a colored finish

Not every colored PVC window needs metal. If you want color without a separate aluminum layer, there is the colored-PVC route: Kombisystem with an acrylic exterior finish bonded to the PVC during production. The frame stays PVC through and through, and the finish changes the surface.

How I decide between them:

  • Kombisystem with acrylic finish when the goal is a colored PVC window and the house does not depend on metal detailing.
  • Kontur Alu when the exterior should read as metal: sharp edges, coated aluminum surface, coordination with metal trim.

Both colors are chosen from physical samples, not screens. My guide to European window colors and finishes covers foil, acrylic and coated metal in more detail, and the color range is on the colors page.

Where a hybrid makes sense, and where it does not

Good fits:

  • Contemporary homes and multi-family projects where the exterior frame color and edge matter and the interior is a background element.
  • Projects already planned in European PVC (tilt-turn, casement) where the architect wants a metal exterior on the street elevations.
  • Owners who want a wipe-clean interior and do not want to maintain a wood finish.

Poor fits:

  • A house where natural timber inside is part of the design - that is aluminum-clad wood or wood windows.
  • Very large spans, minimal sightlines or steel-look profiles - that is structural aluminum.
  • A budget-only decision - a plain PVC window is the simpler answer, and I say so.

Available sizes, opening types and finishes for the hybrid depend on the variant, so I confirm them against the actual window schedule rather than quoting a generic maximum.

What I would specify

For a modern house with dark exterior frames, a light interior and no wood anywhere in the finish schedule, I would specify Kontur Alu on the elevations where the metal exterior is visible and coordinate its color with the trim from a physical sample. If the owners later tell me they love the oak floors and want the windows to match, I would move the same openings to Clad Flush instead - same metal exterior idea, wood inside. And if the facade does not need metal at all, I would put Kombisystem with an acrylic finish next to it in the quote so they can see the simpler option. For the wider material picture, my aluminum vs PVC vs vinyl guide is the next read.

FAQ

What is a hybrid window? A window that combines two frame materials, each doing a different job. In my range it means a multi-chamber PVC window with an aluminum cover on the outside: PVC inside, aluminum outside.

Is a hybrid window the same as aluminum-clad wood? No. Both have an aluminum exterior, but the hybrid has a PVC core and a PVC interior, while aluminum-clad wood has a timber core and a real wood interior.

Is an aluminum-clad vinyl window an aluminum window? No. The aluminum is a cover. Structure, insulation and hardware belong to the PVC window underneath, so it behaves like a PVC window with a metal exterior surface.

Does the aluminum cover make the window less energy efficient? The insulating work is done by the PVC chambers and the glass, and the cover sits on the exterior face. The performance figures for a specific assembly are confirmed with the glazing and seals chosen for the project.

Can the inside and outside be different colors? Yes. The exterior color comes from the aluminum cover, and the interior stays PVC, so a light interior with a dark exterior is a normal combination.

How do I get a quote for hybrid windows? Send the window schedule or plans through /quote, or configure a frame, glass and opening in Studio and send the brief. I will put the hybrid next to the alternatives for the same openings.
