Overview

What makes the Janisol HI
stand out.

Janisol HI is Jansen's high-insulation steel line: steel profiles joined by glass-fibre-reinforced insulating bars, in one family for hinged doors, French doors, fixed glazing and casement windows. I use it when a project needs real steel proportions with a thermal break, for example glazed double doors with applied muntins. It is heavy and made to order, so I plan hinges, threshold and header with your architect before drawings are approved. This is real steel, not steel-look aluminum.

This is real steel. The slim aluminum systems on my steel-look windows page are a different product: lighter, with a steel-inspired profile. See the real steel windows and doors guide for how the two compare.

Key Highlights

  • Real steel section with a thermal break, 3.15 in (80 mm) deep for doors
  • Double doors, French doors, side lights and transoms in one family
  • Applied muntins give the classic divided-light proportion
  • Casement and fixed windows in the same section family
  • Quoted from your drawings with weights and handling notes
  • Reference configuration drawn and weighed: 72 x 96 in, about 552 lb

Ideal For

Glazed double doors and French doors where the steel section is the design, custom homes with an architect-drawn elevation, and projects that want a thermally broken steel door rather than an aluminum one.

Consider an Alternative When

Janisol Arte 2.0 when the face must be thinner or the top is arched; steel-look aluminum when weight, size or budget rule out steel. Steel-look aluminum is a different product - see the aluminum systems on the steel-look page.

Window sash depth

3.54 in (90 mm)

Glass thickness

Doors to 2.24 in; windows to 2.64 in (triple glazing)

Frame U-factor

From about 0.13 Btu/h-ft2-F, per Jansen documentation

Door leaf weight

Up to about 617 lb, per Jansen documentation

Openings

Single and double doors, side lights, transoms, casement windows, fixed glazing

Reference configuration

72 x 96 in double door, about 552 lb, quoted

Documentation

European (EN) test data; not a US rating. Confirmed per project

Values are Jansen documentation for the system, not a rating of a supplied unit. The whole-door U-factor depends on size and glazing and is confirmed in the quote.

European test classes are not NFRC ratings. If your permit needs rated numbers, tell me at the start and I will tell you what exists for the assembly.

Door hardware follows the European profile-cylinder pattern; US lock and strike compatibility is confirmed per project.

Options for your project

Doors

Single or double leaf, inward or outward, with side lights and a transom. Applied muntins are supplied loose and bonded on site.

Windows

Casement and fixed windows in the same steel family, so door and window faces read together.

Glazing

Double glazing is used in my reference quote. Triple glazing is possible within the depth range and is worth discussing for cold climates.

Finish

Powder coat in a RAL color. Reference configurations are matte black; coating and care are confirmed in the quote.

Quoted configuration

Drawn and weighed for a US project quote.

These drawings come from a quote I prepared for a US project. The drawing shows the exterior view; the section shows the profile build-up. Sizes, glazing and weights are as quoted. Nothing here is described as built or installed, and names and prices are not shown.

Janisol HI: your questions

How heavy is a steel double door?

The 72 x 96 in double door I quoted weighs about 552 lb for the pair. That changes hinge selection, jamb anchoring, the header and how the door is handled on site, so I settle those with your architect before drawings are approved.

Can the muntins be real divided lights?

On insulated units the muntins are applied to the glass and bonded on site. They give the steel proportion and read well, but they are not structural. If true divided lights matter, tell me and I will explain the options and what they do to the thermal result.

What glass fits the door section?

Jansen documents glass up to 2.24 in thick in doors. My reference quote uses a 1.1 in double unit with tempered glass; triple glazing is possible within the depth range. The exact build-up is confirmed per project.

Does it meet US egress and safety glazing rules?

A side-hinged door can serve as the egress door and the reference quote uses tempered glass, but requirements depend on your jurisdiction and the architect owns the code path. I confirm the clear opening and glazing type on the shop drawings.

Can the windows match the doors?

Yes. Janisol HI has casement and fixed windows in the same steel family. For a thinner face I would look at Janisol Arte 2.0 instead.
